AION 2 Enhancement Guide: When (and When NOT) to Upgrade Gear
Enhancement unlocks at level 9, and the very first thing I did was slam stones into a white-quality chest piece. Don't be me. This system is generous in some ways and brutally expensive in others, and the game explains almost none of it. Here's the complete plain-English breakdown — rates, what's safe, what can blow up, and the exact order I upgrade things in. All numbers current as of October 2026 (global Season 1 client data + community testing; NC hasn't officially published the rates).
How Basic Enhancement Works
You open the menu → Enhance → Growth. Every attempt costs Enhance Stones + Kina. Your amulet, belt and Clash Rune also need a matching Enhance Scroll per tap. Each successful plus raises that item's item level, which raises your gear score — the number that gates endgame dungeons.
Success Rates by Rarity
| Rarity | Max level | Success rule |
|---|---|---|
| Common / Rare | +5 | 100% guaranteed, every tap |
| Epic | +10 | 100% guaranteed, every tap |
| Unique | +15 | +1 through +10 are 100%. +11→+15 are roughly 65% / 50% / 35% / 25% / 20% |
| Clash Rune | +10 | +1 is guaranteed; +2 onward can fail |
The critical fact to memorize: +1 to +10 never fails. All the way through Epic, and through +10 on Unique gear, enhancement is risk-free. The gambling only starts at Unique +11.
What Happens at Unique +11 and Above
From +11 on, taps can fail — but on regular gear, a failure does NOT downgrade the item and does NOT destroy it. You simply lose the materials you spent and get a small +5% soft-pity bonus toward the next attempt. So +11–15 is a material sink, never a catastrophe. Above +15, Amplified Enhance uses Amplify Stones (up to +5, roughly 66%→20%, again no downgrade on failure).
My rule: nothing transitional ever goes past +10. In fact, leveling Uniques stop at +5 — that's enough to hit the 1400 gear-score gate, and the Kina cost of pushing higher is the thing you'll actually regret.
⚠️ Clash Runes Are the Real Danger
Clash Runes play by different, nastier rules:
- +1 always succeeds.
- From +2 onward, failure can destroy (lose) the rune entirely. Rates fall hard — roughly 80% / 66% / 50% / 33% / 25% / 20% / 15% / 12% / 10% from +2 to +10. (Some client/community wording describes the penalty as a level downgrade rather than a full destruction — check the tooltip on your own client, but either way +2 onward risks a genuine, irreversible loss.)
This is the #1 way new players permanently burn rare materials. Treat +1 as free, and only tap +2 or higher when you have spare scrolls and a backup rune.
Extracting Old Gear: Yes, You Get Your Stones Back
AION 2 has no NPC vendor for gear — old equipment gets Extracted (dismantled) from your Cube. This is more forgiving than it sounds:
- ✅ 100% of the Enhance Stones you invested are refunded.
- ✅ You unlock the item's appearance for transmog.
- ❌ The Kina is NOT refunded.
- ❌ Socketed Manastones / Theostones are NOT refunded (removing or extracting destroys them).
That last point is the actual trap. Stones are a renewable loan; Kina and good socketables are the money you truly lose. Community testing on a single ilvl-86 helm from +0 to +10 came to roughly 30,000 Enhance Stones and 7.7 million Kina — notice which number hurts. So never sink big Kina or rare stones into gear you'll replace next week. Before you Extract a Unique, check whether it's worth using Transfer on instead.
Manastones: The Random-Roll Money Pit
Socketing a Manastone adds one bonus stat, and the value is rolled randomly. You cannot lock a good roll or pick the stat outcome. Fail a socketing attempt and the stone is destroyed; pulling a stone back out also destroys it.
- On leveling/transition gear, use whatever mediocre roll you get and move on. Chasing a perfect roll is an endless gold burner.
- Superior Manastones are hard currency — never socket them into gear you'll outgrow, and don't panic-sell them on the Market during launch-week price chaos.
- Same rule for Amplify Stone Fragments and high-grade Soulstones: hoard them for endgame pieces, not for a blue drop you'll Extract in two days.
Transfer (Level 45): Moving Upgrades to New Gear
At 45 you unlock Transfer, which moves investment from an old (donor, consumed) item to a new one:
- Carries over: Enhance level, Amplification, and Soul Binding lines.
- Does NOT carry over: Manastones, Theostones, or Potential — you redo those on the new piece.
- Restrictions: Unique gear only, both pieces bound to the same character, and the target can't have fixed Soul Bindings.
- Line counts must match. Moving a 4-line piece onto a 5-line crafted piece grants the 5th line free (this is the ideal, most profitable transfer). Going the other way — 5 lines into 3 — keeps only the first three, wasting two.
One oddity people call the "ilvl 70 trap": transferred Soul Binding lines keep their old binding percentages instead of re-rolling for the new item. It still works in your favor because the same percentage gives a bigger absolute value on higher-ilvl gear — the numbers looking unchanged isn't a bug.
What I Upgrade, In Order
- Revelation Amulet + Noble Belt — first, and max them. These two slots are permanent: you tier them Rare +10 → Morph to Epic → +10 → Morph to Unique, and they stay with you to endgame. Every stone here is a lifetime investment. Feed them Empyrean Traces via Monoliths too.
- Your weapon — enhancement matters more on damage than on armor.
- Everything else, sparingly — spread upgrades evenly across Unique pieces, cap leveling gear at +5, and don't go past +10 on anything you won't keep or Transfer.
- Permanent Combat Power: while you're at it, remember skills, Stigmas, the Daevanion Board and titles raise your real power without touching enhancement at all — and those never get replaced.
Mistakes I Won't Repeat
- Enhancing white/green/blue gear at all while leveling (wear it bare).
- Socketing Superior Manastones into transitional pieces.
- Assuming Extract refunds Kina — it doesn't.
- Tapping a Clash Rune to +2 without backup materials.
- Transferring 5 lines downward into a 3-line item, or trying to Transfer across characters.
Upgrade the two permanent pieces, keep leveling gear at an even +5, stay out of Clash Rune RNG until you're stocked, and let Extract + Transfer carry your stone investment forward. Do that and you'll have more materials at 45 than most players twice your level.
