AION 2 Clash Runes Guide: Rates, Fails and Safe Upgrades
I destroyed my first Clash Rune about ten minutes after I learned what one was, so let me save you the headache. Clash Runes are one of the easiest early Combat Power bumps in AION 2, but they have a nastier rule than normal gear enhancement: a failed upgrade past +1 is punished hard (more on the exact penalty below, because sources disagree). Here's how they actually work and how I upgrade them without ever ending up with two empty slots.
What is a Clash Rune?
A Clash Rune is a special equipable item (item level 40) that gives you a bundle of combat stats at once:
- PvE Damage Boost
- PvE Damage Tolerance
- Penetration
- Combat Speed
- Multi-hit Chance
You have two Rune slots per character, so you can equip two at the same time. Even at +0 these are worth having, which is why you should never leave both slots empty for long.
How you get them
- Your first runes come from regional quests. The introductory rune chest gives you a rune plus nine enhancement scrolls.
- At level 45, after you push the main story and Ascension questline forward, more regional quests open up that award additional class-rune chests (your third and fourth runes). Open your journal (J), check the Regional tab, and clear the rune-chest quests — they're mostly auto-path and simple mob kills.
- You can also buy replacement chests with Nightmare currency later.
That matters because of the fail rule: you want a steady supply of spares.
Enhancement rates (and what failure does)
The first level is safe, then it gets brutal fast. As of October 2026, the reported global rates are:
| Target level | Success chance |
|---|---|
| +1 | 100% |
| +2 | 80% |
| +3 | 66% |
| +4 | 50% |
| +5 | 33% |
| +6 | 25% |
| +7 | 20% |
| +8 | 15% |
| +9 | 12% |
| +10 | 10% |
What a failure actually does — read this, because sources disagree. Most launch coverage (Game8, Destructoid and community guides) reports that a failed attempt at +2 or above destroys the rune outright, with no protection scroll and no bad-luck pity. However, the Fextralife community wiki currently lists the penalty as a one-level downgrade (Level −1) rather than destruction. The two may reflect different builds, a tooltip that changed, or unconfirmed data. Until it's settled on the live global client, treat a +2 failure as "you can lose this rune" and check the failure text shown in your own client before you tap. Either way there is no protection scroll that saves the attempt, and there is no pity — a failure doesn't make the next try more likely.
If you do lose an equipped rune (destroyed, or knocked down a level per the wiki reading), plan to refill that slot — a replacement starts its enhancement journey over.
The safe way to upgrade (what I do)
The whole trick is to never gamble with the rune you're actively wearing.
- Keep two runes equipped at all times. Those are your floor — don't touch them on a whim.
- Every extra rune chest / spare rune you get becomes upgrade fodder. Try to push the spare higher.
- If a spare succeeds past what you have equipped, swap it in and the old equipped one becomes the next experiment.
- If it explodes, no problem — your two equipped runes are still live, so you never lose power.
- Use the free enhancement scrolls (each chest comes with nine) on these attempts rather than spending other resources; scrolls accumulate as you open more chests.
This is the consensus method across the community, and it's just probability discipline: you spend your disposable copies chasing high enchants while your equipped pair guarantees the baseline.
Should you even push past +1 early?
Honestly, for most of the leveling journey: take the free +1 and stop. The stats scale up with enhancement level, with bigger jumps at the higher tiers, but the destruction risk below is severe. I only start feeding spares past +1 once I:
- have at least two runes already equipped,
- have replacement chests banked (regional quests done, Nightmare currency available), and
- am at the level-45 gearing phase where Combat Power actually gates content.
Until then a pair of +1 runes is excellent value for zero risk. Don't blow your only copy gambling for a +5 while leveling — that's one of the beginner mistakes that quietly costs you power you can't immediately get back.
How this fits your other upgrades
Clash Runes sit alongside your regular gear enhancement, which behaves differently (safe to +10 on equipment before the odds fall, with the item not destroyed the same way). Don't confuse the two systems or you'll be too cautious with gear and too reckless with runes. The full rules for enhancing weapons and armor are in the enhancement guide, and once you hit the cap you'll be juggling runes, gear transfer and Arcana together — the level 45 checklist walks through the order.
Quick recap
- Two rune slots, good stats even at +0, item level 40.
- Get them from regional quests (more at 45) and the Nightmare shop.
- +1 is 100%; at +2 and up a failure is harsh — most guides say it destroys the rune, the Fextralife wiki says it downgrades one level — so assume you can lose it, with no protection scroll and no pity.
- Keep two equipped, gamble only with spares, swap in winners.
- Take the safe +1 while leveling; chase high enchants at 45 with replacements banked.
