AION 2 Best Class for Beginners: Pick by Playstyle

Updated 2026-10-20 · Global release (Season 1) · launch-window meta, subject to patches

AION 2: Which Class Should You Pick? Best Class for Every Playstyle

"What class should I play?" is the single most common question in the AION 2 newbie discord I'm in, and it makes sense why: there are 8 classes, you can't change class later, and rerolling means leveling 1–45 all over again. After leveling to 45 and helping four friends pick their first character, I'm convinced the tier list is the wrong place to start. The right question is: how do you actually want to play?

Strength comments below reflect the October 2026 launch-window meta and are subject to patches. If you want the raw ranking, it's here → AION 2 Class Tier List for New Players

First, the Rule Nobody Tells You

Your class is permanent on that character. As of the global launch there is no class-change item or feature, and NCSoft hasn't confirmed one. You get 4 character slots per server, so alts exist — but each one is a full rerun of the leveling story, and weekly rewards are account-limited, so spreading yourself thin hurts. Pick the class whose gameplay loop you'll enjoy for 100+ hours, not the class sitting at S tier this week.

Both factions can play every class — faction choice is separate → Elyos vs Asmodian Faction Guide

The 30-Second Map of All 8 Classes

Class Weapon Range Vibe
Templar Longsword + shield Melee front The immovable tank; taunts, shields, slow kills
Gladiator Greatsword Melee Tanky AoE brawler, self-healing, off-tank
Assassin Dual daggers Melee Stealth, backstabs, max burst — max skill + ping demands
Ranger Bow Ranged physical Traps, kiting, safe and simple, scales late
Sorcerer Spellbook Ranged magic Huge fire/ice damage and CC, paper-thin health
Spiritmaster Orb Ranged + pets Summons spirits to tank/heal/damage; legendary soloer
Cleric Mace Mid/back Only healer, only resurrection; instant group invites
Chanter Staff Melee support Aura buffs, off-heals, surprisingly good damage

Pick by How You Want to Play

🐺 "I mostly play solo"

Best: Spiritmaster, Gladiator, or Ranger.

🤝 "I'll mostly play with friends / want guaranteed groups"

Best: Cleric, then Templar.

Every 5-man dungeon wants 1 tank + 1 healer, and there's exactly one of each. Cleric is the only class that can truly heal and the only one that can resurrect — your queue pops instantly at every level. Templar is just as mandatory and even harder to kill. If your friend group already has both, Chanter is the support upgrade every party loves.

🛡️ "I like tanking / being unkillable"

Templar. It's not close. Simple rotation, enormous error tolerance, wanted in every party and raid, viable in PvP because you simply don't die. Accept one trade: solo quest kills are slow. If you want tankiness with faster kills and no tanking responsibility, Gladiator is your alt.

💚 "I like healing/support"

💥 "I want big damage numbers"

🌐 "I live far from the servers / my ping is over 100ms"

Avoid Assassin. Its chain combos visibly drop around 100+ ms — this isn't theory, it's the #1 "is this class weak or am I bad?" launch complaint. Ping-tolerant picks:

  1. Ranger — ranged, instant shots, kiting
  2. Sorcerer — cast bars are far more forgiving than melee chains
  3. Cleric / Templar — neither rotation is timing-tight

Check your latency to the region you're rolling on before committing — it's the other permanent choice alongside class.

😌 "I'm new to MMOs / I just want something easy"

The three universally agreed safe picks are Templar, Ranger, Cleric:

Any of the three will teach you the game without punishing you.

🔥 "I want to dominate PvP"

📈 "I care about future-proofing, not week-one fame"

Korean servers are ~11 months of patches ahead, and the classes whose stock rises most there are Ranger (top-tier endgame DPS appearances) and Gladiator (scales with gear). The class most at risk of a nerf is probably Sorcerer, given its launch dominance — but don't reroll on speculation; patches cut both ways.

Still Torn Between Two? Use This Tiebreaker

  1. Melee or ranged? Can't stand chasing moving targets? Ranger/Sorcerer/Spiritmaster. Hate managing distance? The melee four.
  2. Busy or simple? Spiritmaster and Assassin ask for constant attention; Templar and Ranger don't.
  3. Do you panic under party responsibility? Healer/tank matter most; pick Gladiator/Ranger/Chanter for lower-stakes contributions.
  4. Solo or scheduled? Solo-first: Spiritmaster/Gladiator/Ranger. Group-first: Cleric/Templar/Chanter.

💡 Final tip: you can try before you commit — make a character, play to the first ascension (level 5–6, about 30–60 minutes), and feel the combat. Wings arrive in that window too. Hate it? Reroll then, not at level 30.
