AION 2 Crafting & Gathering Guide: Why It's Endgame BiS
Here's the thing that surprises every new AION 2 player: a lot of the best PvE gear in the game is crafted, not dropped from bosses — weapons, armor and accessories that carry percentage-based PvE Damage Boost and PvE Damage Tolerance you can't easily get elsewhere. That single fact turns crafting from an optional side activity into an endgame system. This guide explains how it works, what to level first, and how free players and members should approach it differently, as of October 2026.
Gathering: it's called Essence Extraction
In AION 2, gathering is named Essence Extraction, and unlike crafting it has no separate professions — it's one shared mastery:
- There are roughly 27 node types in the global client: ore, gems, logs, herbs, cooking ingredients and Odyle. Gathering ore doesn't lock you out of herbs; successful extraction raises the same overall mastery.
- You have a few general gathering skills plus specializations that make you better at chosen material types. You can still gather anything you didn't specialize in — you're just less efficient at it.
- A common recommendation is to take Odyle as a specialization, because Odyle feeds Energy crafting (your daily bonus-loot throttle) and is always in demand.
Gather while you level. It's the cheapest material stream in the game, and nodes sit along normal questing and flight routes, so there's no reason to hit 45 with zero extraction skill and buy every material at a markup.
The five crafting professions
One character can learn all five (unlocked around level 10 via Esc → Crafting) — you don't need alts for different crafts:
| Profession | Makes |
|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Metal weapons: greatsword, longsword, dagger, mace, and guards |
| Armorsmithing | Plate/chain armor pieces |
| Handicrafting | Bows, rings, accessories — the craft ranged and many DPS want |
| Alchemy | Potions, scrolls, consumables |
| Cooking | Food buffs |
Recipes combine materials gathered in the wild with vendor-bought reagents; high-level recipes use refined versions of the base materials.
What to craft first
The community consensus for gearing value:
- Your weapon first — Blacksmithing for melee/mace classes, Handicrafting for bow users. A good crafted weapon (like the crafted bow Rangers chase) moves your damage more than any armor slot.
- Rings / guard / accessories next via Handicrafting.
- Armor via Armorsmithing to fill weak slots.
- Keep Alchemy and Cooking leveled enough to make your own consumables — raid food and potions are a constant drain if you buy them forever.
Match the craft to your class before you specialize your gathering; focus Essence Extraction on the materials your weapon and armor actually need.
How a craft actually works (two layers of RNG)
Understand both rolls so the costs don't surprise you:
- The craft itself is a success-or-fail roll. Failure consumes the materials, and standard gear crafting cannot reach 100% success, so budget for failures on expensive recipes.
- Crafted gear then goes through Soul Binding, a second random step that rolls its bonus sub-stats using Kina plus a Soul Codex. This is why Soul Codex from the Nightmare shop is valuable — you'll spend it tuning good crafted pieces.
That double roll is exactly why you shouldn't pour premium materials into a piece until you're sure it's a keeper, and why the gear transfer rules matter — Manastones don't carry over, but Enhancement and Soul Binding do.
Free players vs members — the honest difference
Crafting and gathering themselves are free, and a free player can craft their own best-in-slot gear. The difference is economic:
- Members can list surplus crafts and materials on the player Market (roughly 10% tax) and buy materials they're missing, so they treat crafting as a Kina-making business as well as gearing.
- Free players mainly craft and gather to sustain their own character — they can't sell surplus as easily or buy every missing material, which makes personal gathering and dungeon farming a requirement rather than a convenience. (Some high-tier materials are intrinsically Bound for everyone.)
Either way, gathering and crafting can generate large amounts of Kina without spending Odyle Energy, which is why dedicated crafters get wealthy while pure dungeon runners hit the energy wall.
Crafting for profit — do the math first
Always compare the average craft cost (including expected failures and fees) against the Market price before committing materials. Prices swing wildly: some crafted weapons sell for far more than their material cost, while common pieces are cheaper to buy than to make. Account for the sale tax and how quickly something actually sells (liquidity), not just the listed price. Alchemy consumables and food tend to move steadily; rare weapons are higher margin but slower.
Two safety warnings
- Answer the anti-bot prompts while farming nodes. Running an unattended node loop and ignoring the "are you a robot?" checks can get an account actioned — stay at the keyboard.
- Never buy Kina or crafted gear from real-money third-party sites. Use the in-game Kina↔Quna Exchange; RMT is a ban risk and pollutes the Market. The monetization realities are in our free-to-play breakdown.
How this fits your progression
- Levels 1–45: gather everything along the route, unlock all five crafts around level 10, and keep them ticking up passively; make your own potions and food.
- At 45: target your crafted BiS weapon first, then accessories; tune finished pieces with Soul Binding; only socket expensive Manastones into confirmed keepers per the level-45 checklist.
- Treat crafting as a long-term project that overlaps with daily Odyle Energy and dungeon runs rather than a one-day grind.
If you're still leveling, the leveling route shows where to gather efficiently, and the beginner mistakes guide covers the resource traps this system creates.
TL;DR
Best PvE gear is crafted, not dropped. Essence Extraction is one shared gathering mastery across ~27 node types — gather while leveling and consider specializing in Odyle. Learn all five crafts on one character, build your weapon first (Blacksmithing/Handicrafting), then accessories and consumables. Budget for craft-failure material loss and a second Soul Binding roll. Free players craft to self-sustain; members also sell on the Market. Always compare craft cost to Market price, and answer those anti-bot prompts.
