AION 2 Templar Guide: Tank Rotation, Stigmas and Build

The Templar is the only pure tank in the global AION 2 client (the Gladiator is a hybrid tank/dealer, but you're the real thing). Sword and board, you stand at the front, hold the boss's attention, protect the party, and — thanks to the Fury mechanic — you even make everyone else hit harder. It looks like a slow, button-heavy class, but the rotation is genuinely simple once you understand Judgment. Here's the practical version as of October 2026.

The one mechanic that defines the class: Judgment

Your damage and threat loop revolves around Judgment, which you don't just press — you trigger it through your shield skills:

  1. Shield Smite and Warding Strike set up / trigger Judgment.
  2. You then spam Judgment while the Executor buff is active, keeping that buff up for as long as possible.
  3. Loop back through your shield skills to re-trigger it.

That's the whole PvE rhythm: shield skill → Judgment spam → maintain Executor → repeat. You hold enmity naturally just by executing this loop, so you usually don't have to mash a dedicated taunt on every pull.

Core skills

Passive priority

A real quirk of the current global balance: early content is easy, so most Templars build offensively while leveling rather than stacking every defensive point. You only need to lean hard into survival for the tougher level-45 dungeons.

Stigma loadout (22 / 27 / 32 / 37)

A widely used boss-tanking progression is:

  1. Empyrean Lord's Punishment (22)
  2. Nezekan's Shield (27)
  3. Executing Blade (32) — defense shred and burst.
  4. Taunt (37) — for guaranteed enmity control in parties.

For solo questing and mob farming, swap Taunt → Executing Blade-style offense (or simply drop the dedicated taunt) since you don't need to hold threat for anyone alone. Remember Stigmas reset for free with full shard refund, so keep a boss preset and a farming preset — four slots unlock at 22/27/32/37.

Stat priority

The reason Accuracy comes first surprises new tanks: a Templar that whiffs can't build enmity or trigger block-based effects, so being unhittable-but-unreliable is worse than being consistently connected.

How to pull and tank a dungeon

  1. Lead with Punishment to engage (it has long reach), then plant facing the boss away from the party so frontal/cone attacks don't clip your DPS and healer.
  2. Rotate Shield Smite → Warding Strike → Judgment spam, keeping Executor up; weave your AoE stun on trash packs.
  3. Use Taunt when a DPS pulls threat or on phase resets, not as your only source of aggro.
  4. Save Defiance and Nezekan's Shield for big tankbusters rather than spending them at full HP.
  5. Position is your real defensive cooldown — keep mobs in front of your shield and your back safe.

If you're still learning the group endgame this feeds into, the level-45 checklist covers gearing and dungeon order, and the enhancement guide explains how far to safely push your sword and shield.

Solo leveling

Templar is slow-but-unkillable alone: you stun groups with Shield Smite, grind them down with Judgment, and heal back with Defiance. Pulls take longer than a burst DPS class, but you can tag many mobs at once and almost never die, which makes it a relaxing, low-APM choice. It's one of the sturdier recommendations for a first MMO player in the beginner class guide and ranks well for group demand on the tier list.

PvP playstyle

In Abyss and arena fights you're an immovable front-liner and peeler:

Common Templar mistakes

TL;DR

The only pure tank: trigger Judgment with Shield Smite and Warding Strike, spam it under the Executor buff, grab Fury so your blocks buff the party's damage, and take Accuracy to the hit cap before Block/HP. Stigmas run Empyrean Lord's Punishment → Nezekan's Shield → Executing Blade → Taunt, swapping the taunt for offense while soloing. Easy to survive, always wanted in groups.
