AION 2 Beginner Guide 2026: Before You Play

AION 2 Beginner Guide 2026: Everything to Know Before You Play
I downloaded AION 2 on launch day, rolled a character without reading anything, and learned the hard way so you don't have to. After leveling to 45, running my first endgame dungeons, and watching one of my early Clash Runes literally explode, I put together the beginner guide I wish I'd had before I clicked "create character."
If you're brand new — maybe you never even played the original 2008 AION — this is the plain-English version.
What Is AION 2?
AION 2 is a free-to-play open-world PC MMORPG from NCSoft, built in Unreal Engine 5. It's a sequel, not a remaster — nothing carries over from old AION or AION Classic, and the old guides will actively mislead you.
| Quick fact | Details (global release) |
|---|---|
| Launch date | Free-to-play global launch: October 5, 2026 (Founder's early access Sept 30) |
| Platform | PC only — Steam and NC's PURPLE launcher, same servers |
| Business model | Free to download and play to max level; membership + battle pass + cosmetics |
| Max level | 45 in Season 1 (Korea/Taiwan servers are ~11 months ahead — don't copy their builds) |
| Core fantasy | Two warring factions, wings you get at level 5–6, and flying as a combat/travel system |
The Two Decisions You Can't Undo
Everything else in this game can be fixed later. These two things basically can't:
- Your faction (Elyos or Asmodian). Each server holds only ONE faction. Pick the wrong one and you and your friends are literally enemies in PvP. Decide together before anyone creates a character → AION 2 Elyos vs Asmodian faction guide
- Your class. Classes are locked to your character. There is currently no class change — switching means rerolling from level 1 (you get 4 character slots per server). Choose carefully → AION 2 Class Tier List for New Players and Best Class for Every Playstyle
💡 Tip: Choosing on a tier list alone is the #1 reroll trap. Ask "what do I want to be doing at 100 hours?" — tanking, healing, kiting, bursting, pet managing — not "what's S tier this week."
The Core Loop in One Paragraph
Follow the gold story campaign, ascend into a winged Daeva, and quest/fly your way to level 45. At max level the game stops being about levels and starts being about Item Level (gear score): you run dungeons to raise it, which unlocks harder dungeons, and at Item Level 1000 the Abyss opens up — the big PvPvE zone where Elyos and Asmodians fight for points you spend on PvP rewards. That's basically the whole game: level → gear up → dungeon up → faction war, with daily/weekly tasks feeding it.
Combat: 5 Things the Tutorial Rushes Past
AION 2 has two control modes — Action (crosshair) and Classic (tab-targeting) — and you can swap anytime with the / key (Settings → Combat → Controls). I use Action for PvE and Classic for big PvP. Neither is stronger.
- Left-click basic attacks regenerate mana. Basic attacks have no cooldown and give mana back; skills spend it. If you only press skills, you'll run dry in seconds. Weave basics into every fight.
- Back and side attacks deal more damage — for every class. DPS stands behind bosses. As a Templar, you face the boss and point its back at your party.
- Chain skills pop up on Q and E. When a skill triggers a follow-up, a prompt appears briefly. Press it — this is a big chunk of your damage.
- Shift dodges on a stamina bar, and it can fully avoid mechanics. Most boss attacks aren't "tank and spank" — you're meant to dodge out of them, not heal through them.
- There is no auto-battle. There's auto-pathing to quests (click the quest or Alt+1–9), but you fight every fight yourself. Anyone telling you global AION 2 has mobile auto-play is describing the Korean phone version.
Leveling 1–45, the Short Version
- Follow the gold campaign quests. They unlock every system in order and give the best XP. Don't clear every exclamation mark on the map — side detours slow you down.
- Start Regional Missions at level 12, picking up ones that overlap your campaign route. XP tightens around level 40 (the 40–44 stretch is a big chunk of total leveling XP — that's normal, not a bug).
- Wings arrive early: level 5 for Elyos, level 6 for Asmodian. V toggles flight, Space glides, Shift boosts. Alternate flying and gliding to travel furthest — flight uses an energy bar.
- Dungeons unlock as you level (first one, Krao Cave, at 20). Run them as you reach them, but don't blow all your Odyle Energy (the resource that opens end-of-dungeon reward cubes) in low-level dungeons — save some for level 45.
| Level | What unlocks |
|---|---|
| 5 / 6 | First ascension + wings (Elyos / Asmodian) |
| 9 | Gear enhancement |
| 12 | Regional Missions |
| 16 | Legions (guilds) |
| 20 | First Expedition dungeon: Krao Cave |
| 22 | Second ascension + Stigma skills |
| 30 | Daily Dungeon (your main Enhance Stones source) |
| 45 | Max level: Abyss, Nightmare, Market, endgame dungeons |

Gear and Enhancement: Three Rules That Save You Fortune
I broke all three. Don't be me.
- Never enhance white/green/blue leveling gear. Weapon and armor upgrades are guaranteed from +1 to +10 — Enhance Stones are precious later. Wear quest drops raw while leveling.
- Dismantle old gear, don't sell it. Extraction refunds your Enhance Stones (Kina spent is not refunded).
- Do not touch Clash Rune upgrades above +1 casually. From +2, a failed attempt can destroy the rune itself. It's the most painful "new player" loss in the game.
There are two permanent companions worth investing in, though: your amulet and belt stay with your character the whole journey and can be morphed upward at +10. Deep dive → AION 2 Enhancement Guide and 15 Beginner Mistakes to Avoid on Day One
What Happens at Level 45
You'll hit max around Item Level 800, the campaign ends, and the game quietly switches to a gear-gate structure:
- Finish leftover side quests (many pay large Kina sums), keep upgrading amulet/belt, and enhance Unique pieces evenly to around +5.
- Farm Draupnir Expedition (gate 700, 5–7 minutes per run) to reach Item Level 1000.
- At 1000: Nightmare (solo boss challenge for upgrade materials) and the Abyss (faction PvPvE) open up.
- Beyond that, gates climb 1400 → 1600 → 2100 → 2800 (the 10-person Sanctuary raid).

⚠️ Safety warning: Players were already banned during launch week for using third-party DPS meter add-ons. NC takes a zero-tolerance line on unauthorized tools. The game has a built-in combat stats panel (Ctrl+X) — use that.
Is AION 2 Free-to-Play Friendly?
You can download, level to 45, and see every dungeon without paying — the cash shop doesn't sell weapon/armor stats, and there are no loot boxes. The paid pieces are a Quai Membership (notably unlocks the player Market), a Daeva Pass battle pass that speeds up upgrade-material income, and cosmetics. Whether that counts as "pay-to-win" or "pay-to-progress" is the hottest community debate; the practical summary is free players can do everything, paying players do it faster. - [ ] Confirm faction and server match your friends — no takebacks
- [ ] Don't enhance anything. Seriously.
