AION 2 Gladiator Guide: Greatsword AoE and Off-Tank Build
The Gladiator is the melee bruiser — a greatsword AoE damage dealer who can also off-tank. Where the Templar is a pure defensive anchor, the Gladiator brings wide area damage, lots of crowd control and reliable self-sustain, and frequently ends up holding the boss in casual groups anyway. It's forgiving, great at farming packs, and consistently strong. Here's how to build it as of October 2026.
The core mechanic: Overhead Slam and the Rage Burst window
Your PvE damage revolves around making Overhead Slam available as often as possible. Normally it can only be used against knocked-down targets or on a small proc chance — not freely. The trick is a Stigma:
- Rage Burst opens a roughly ten-second window during which you can use Overhead Slam freely.
- Its level-16 Specialty removes the cooldown entirely, so inside that window you can spam it.
- That Rage Burst → free Overhead Slam cycle is the heart of Gladiator single-target and AoE burst.
So the rotation is built around generating knockdowns, triggering Rage Burst, and dumping Overhead Slams while the window is open, then filling with your other melee skills while it's on cooldown.
Skills and role tools
- Wide greatsword AoE swings that make Gladiator arguably the best open-world pack farmer among melee classes.
- Plenty of CC: knockdowns, stuns and area control that group up and lock down trash.
- Counter-strike doubles as a party buff, and Murderous Burst adds personal damage.
- Enough sustain and durability to off-tank when there's no Templar — you're tagged as both Tank and Dealer in the global client.
- Lifestealing Blade is a popular Stigma for damage plus health recovery, leaning into the bruiser identity.
Stigmas
Common global picks:
- Rage Burst — enables the free-Overhead-Slam window (core, take it first).
- Lunge Stance — reduces skill cooldowns on hit and raises attack speed, double-attack chance and move speed for a long duration; great for both rotation efficiency and PvP stickiness.
- Zikel's Blessing — Attack and Accuracy boosts.
- Lifestealing Blade — damage and healing for sustain.
- Flex slot: Focused Block (more block rate and damage resistance) when you're off-tanking, or Blade Toss / Wave Armor for enemy defense reduction and faster pack clears / PvP utility.
Stigmas reset free with full shard refund, so keep a boss-DPS preset (Rage Burst focus) and a tankier off-tank/farming preset — four slots at 22/27/32/37.
Stat priority
- PvE DPS: Accuracy to the encounter cap → Attack / PvE Damage Boost → Critical Hit and Critical Damage → Combat Speed / Cooldown Reduction, with a solid HP and Damage Tolerance floor because you're often in the thick of it (and sometimes tanking).
- Off-tank: raise Block, Max HP and Damage Tolerance; Gladiator-specific wings and gear that mix boss damage boost with tolerance are highly valued since you're frequently face-tanking.
- PvP: durability first (HP, PvP Damage Tolerance), then stickiness (move/attack speed from Lunge Stance) and damage.
Solo and group play
- Solo farming is the class's signature strength: gather a pack, knock it down, Rage Burst into repeated Overhead Slams, and watch whole groups melt while Lifestealing Blade keeps you healthy. It's one of the most relaxed ways to grind open-world content on the way to 45.
- In groups: AoE down trash where you outshine everyone, then swap to the single-target Rage Burst cycle on bosses. If there's no Templar, face the boss away from the party and lean on Focused Block and your sustain to hold it — you're a legitimate backup tank.
The leveling route and when to start saving keeper gear are in the leveling guide and the level-45 checklist; the safe enhancement ranges for your greatsword are in the enhancement guide.
PvP playstyle
Gladiator is a sticky front-line brawler in PvP:
- Use Lunge Stance speed to stay glued to a target, chain knockdowns and CC to set up Overhead Slam, and burst during Rage Burst.
- Blade Toss/Wave Armor can apply healing reduction, which is valuable for killing enemy Clerics and Chanters.
- You're durable enough to survive in the scrum and peel divers off your back line, but you don't have a Templar's pure mitigation — don't face-tank an entire zerg.
- In aerial sieges, your job is to hold space and lock down clustered enemies; melee in three dimensions takes practice, so review the aerial combat guide before your first big fight. It's a strong, consistent performer on the class tier list and a solid beginner pick because it does well even without perfect play.
Common Gladiator mistakes
- Treating Overhead Slam as a normal button instead of building the Rage Burst window that makes it spammable.
- Skipping Accuracy and then whiffing the knockdowns the whole combo depends on.
- Building pure glass-cannon DPS and then being asked to off-tank with no Block or HP.
- Wasting Rage Burst when the boss is about to become invulnerable or leave melee range.
- Socketing expensive stones into leveling greatswords rather than a 45 keeper.
TL;DR
Greatsword bruiser and off-tank with the game's best melee AoE farming. Generate knockdowns, trigger Rage Burst, and spam Overhead Slam inside its cooldown-free window; fill with CC and sustain. Take Rage Burst, Lunge Stance, Zikel's Blessing and Lifestealing Blade, swapping in Focused Block to off-tank. Build Accuracy to cap, then damage with a durable floor. Forgiving, versatile and always group-useful.
